Bernard trained in Medicine at the University of Western Australia and completed his MD thesis at the same university in 1980. He trained in Cardiology in Perth and London.
Bernard was the Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Royal Perth Hospital from 1981 to 1998. From 1998 until 2006 he was visiting Cardiologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
Bernard's particular interests are in interventional cardiology (angioplasty, stent implantation, ASD closure and valvuloplasty) and in the management of acute coronary syndromes.
Bernard has worked in private practice at the Mount Hospital for the past ten years and currently consults at Mount, Murdoch, Subiaco and St John of God Hospital in Bunbury.
